Providing in the Lord's Way

Dear Friends,

President Uchtdorf gave a phenomenal talk about provident living and welfare principles in the Priesthood Session of General Conference. I invite all ward members to study it this week and set a goal to more fully live these principles of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

President Uchtdorf said, "Unfortunately, there are those who overlook the temporal because they consider it less important. They treasure the spiritual while minimizing the temporal. While it is important to have our thoughts inclined toward heaven, we miss the essence of our religion if our hands are not also inclined toward our fellowman." Perhaps you have felt that you already live providently because you are temporally self-reliant. Consider that your provident living responsibilities include feeding the hungry, giving your time to others and being "free with your substance," that those around you "may be rich like unto you" (Jacob 2:17). I have a testimony of learning to be generous with your means. When I came to BYU I lived with my sister Elizabeth, and one of the things about her that impressed me most was her generosity. I soon realized that she budgeted with the intent to serve others, and that her constant giving made her more humble, more grateful and more compassionate. If you are looking to develop any of these qualities, I know that the service aspect of provident living will bless and transform you.

Here is President Uchtdorf's talk:

Have a wonderful week full of blessings!

Laura
